Blackhall Gaels – Club History

Blackhall Gaels GAA Club was formed in 1995 following the amalgamation of the Kilcloon and Batterstown Junior clubs. From its foundation, the club has been a dual GAA club, promoting both Gaelic football and hurling, alongside Camogie and Ladies Football, throughout the parish.

Based in the communities of Kilcloon, Batterstown and Mulhussey, Blackhall Gaels has grown from its roots as a young club into one of the established GAA organisations in the parish. The club's grounds in Batterstown and Kilcloon provide the base for training and competition across all four codes.

Football

Football success came quickly following the formation of the club. Blackhall Gaels won the Intermediate Championship in 1998 and 2001, before reaching the pinnacle of Meath club football with victory in the Senior Championship in 2003, defeating Simonstown Gaels in the final.

The club also enjoyed success at junior level, winning the Junior C Championship in 2001 and 2008, along with the Junior D Championship in 2005. Underage football has been another important part of the club's development, with Blackhall Gaels winning finals across the various underage grades.

Hurling

Hurling has also played a central role in the history of Blackhall Gaels.

The club won the Junior Hurling Championship and U16 Championship in 2002, followed by an outstanding achievement in 2003 when Blackhall Gaels won the All-Ireland Féile Division 4 title.

Further success followed with the Minor Championship in 2004, the Intermediate Championship in 2005 and the U21 Championship in 2006.

The club continued to build on its underage and adult success, winning the U21 B and Minor B Championships in 2012 as Blackhall/Drumree.

2013 was a standout year for Blackhall Gaels hurling, with the club claiming both the Intermediate Championship and Division 2 League title.

Camogie

The Camogie section was established in 2002, driven forward by the commitment and enthusiasm of Emma Fahy and Christy Mangan.

Success followed almost immediately, with Blackhall Gaels winning the Junior Championship in their first year. The club then made the ambitious move to Senior level, a significant transition for such a young section.

Following the introduction of the Intermediate grade in Meath, Blackhall Gaels moved into the new division. The team reached the Intermediate final in 2006, losing to neighbours Dunboyne.

They responded the following year, defeating Kiltale after a replay and extra time in 2007 to return to the Senior ranks.

This time, Blackhall Gaels made their opportunity count. In 2008, they defeated Kilmessan in the Senior Championship final, securing a landmark Senior title.

After a period without further championship success, the introduction of the Senior B Championship provided a new opportunity. Blackhall Gaels won the competition against Drumree in 2022, before claiming the title again in 2025, defeating Navan O'Mahonys.

The development of underage Camogie has also become a major focus, with Blackhall Gaels regularly represented on Meath Camogie juvenile panels. This pathway has helped produce a number of players who have gone on to represent Meath at adult level, including Jane Dolan, Emily Mangan, Kristina Troy, Helen Murphy, Paula Dunne, Holly Geraghty and Siobhan Whitty.

A Club Built on Development

Across football, hurling, Camogie and Ladies Football, the history of Blackhall Gaels has been built on community, participation and the development of young players.

From the amalgamation of Kilcloon and Batterstown in 1995, the club has continued to grow, producing championship-winning teams at adult and underage level and providing a pathway for players from the local schools and community to progress through the club.

The achievements of the past — from the 2003 Senior Football Championship and All-Ireland Féile success in hurling to the Senior Camogie title of 2008 and Senior B championships of 2022 and 2025 — provide a strong foundation for the next generation of Blackhall Gaels players.
