Indoor Hurling is Back

HurlingThis is where it all started for BHG players Shane Whitty and Stephen Morris who went on to become Christy Ring cup winners with Meath in 2016. It’s also where the playing careers of Jane Dolan and Emily Mangan began, who won the All-Ireland Junior Camogie title with Meath in 2012.

After a long break and driven by the new juvenile chairperson Richard Morris, the Friday night Juvenile Indoor Hurling sessions were re-launched last November. From the very first session it was clear that there was much interest from the children of Mulhussey, Kilcoon and Batterstown. In excess of 50 children from the age of 4 to 12 showed up for training on the launch night. Since then the numbers have gone from strength to strength with an astonishing 84 kids showing up for training last Friday.

The training sessions are designed to let the children experience hurling in a fun environment. The aspiring hurlers are introduced to the fundamentals of the game and they get to practice their newly learned skills in drills and matches. The children are expertly coached by senior hurlers and camogie players as well as Richard Morris and a selector of the senior team.

The Friday night training sessions will continue until the Saturday morning nursery recommences this spring, at which point both football and hurling basics will be coached in the nursery.

Finally, it has been a pleasure to see so much support from parents and other club members for Friday night hurling. With the continued support from the community it looks like Blackhall Gaels will be able to produce gifted and able hurlers and camogie players for years to come.Read More
