Half Time Blackhall Gaels 0-3 Skryne 1-6

Full Time Blackhall Gaels 2-6 Skryne 1-14

The Blackhall women travelled to Skryne for the second round of the league. Having faced them in a challenge match earlier this year, they knew that they were facing into a serious challenge against a steadily improving team. However, they were hopeful after last week that they could make it two wins from two.

The first half did not go to plan for Blackhall. Skryne attacked relentlessly, using their speed and support play to their advantage. Blackhall looked sluggish in comparison in the beginning, and Skryne had a few points on the board before they managed to get into things. This slow start proved costly, and Skryne went into half time leading 1-6 to 0-3.

Blackhall were like a new team in the second half. Katie Penrose put in an outstanding performance at wing back, carrying the ball forward and often stopping her marker in her tracks with her powerful defending. Claire Burke and Emer Keane made a strong defensive spine in full back and centre back, respectively. Captain Paula Dunne put in a serious shift in midfield, regularly bringing the ball into scorable positions.Full advantage was taken of this in the second half, with all three half forwards getting on the scoreboard. The corner forwards were exceptional, with Hannah Prendergast getting out strong in front of her player, and Áine Maye continuing her good run last week with two goals.

Manager Brian can be happy with the performance in the second half. However, that slow start was just too much to overcome, and Blackhall ended up losing on a scoreline of Blackhall 2-6, Skryne 1-14. There were plenty of positives, with some super support play and classy scores. The women will know now that they cannot afford to give teams that much leeway in future. They have a couple of weeks before their next match, and will hope to get back to winning ways after the break.
